My pledge to Volunteers

This campaign is powered by people who choose to step forward. I do not take that lightly.

If you volunteer for my campaign, this is my promise to you.

I will always put your safety, wellbeing, and dignity first. No leaflet, sign, or vote is worth someone being hurt, distressed, or placed in an unsafe situation.

I will take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that campaign activities are safe, well planned, and appropriate to the scale of the campaign, in line with New Zealand’s Health and Safety at Work Act.

You will be provided with a clear volunteer manual setting out what to expect, how to stay safe, and how to raise concerns. Before taking part in campaign activities, you will also receive clear instructions and, where appropriate, brief training or safety briefings. I will not assume prior knowledge or experience.

I will be clear about what I am asking you to do, and just as clear about what I am not asking you to do.

You can step back, pause, or decline any activity at any time.

I will never expect you to tolerate abuse, intimidation, or unsafe conditions. If something does not feel right, you have my full support to disengage and walk away.

I will listen seriously to hazards, incidents, near-misses, and suggestions for improvement, and I will adjust how the campaign operates when risks are identified.

I will respect your time, your limits, and your life outside the campaign. Volunteering should be positive, supportive, and sustainable.

I will treat every volunteer with gratitude and respect, because this campaign is not about using people to win power. It is about working together, in good faith, to strengthen our democracy.

If you choose to help, thank you.

If you choose to stop or step back, thank you just the same.

That is my commitment to you.

What to Expect as a Volunteer

Volunteering for this campaign is straightforward, flexible, and grounded in common sense.

Before you take part in campaign activities, you will receive:

  • a clear volunteer manual outlining roles, safety guidance, and expectations

  • simple briefings or training appropriate to the activity (such as door-knocking or public events)

  • clear guidance on what to do if something feels unsafe or uncomfortable

You are never expected to:

  • enter private homes

  • tolerate abuse or hostility

  • take risks you are not comfortable with

  • prioritise campaigning over your own wellbeing

You can volunteer as much or as little as suits you, and you can step back at any time. Your safety and dignity always come first.
